In August 2020, BH Services, part of Black Hills Works, took ownership of Unique Auto Grooming at 127 Poplar Avenue and began providing car detailing services. Kelly Lambert, the original owner of Unique Auto, thankfully shared his knowledge and expertise prior to his leaving to provide a seamless transition. Services available include exterior and interior cleaning and detailing, headlight restoration services, and cleaning under the hood of the car. The business is open Monday through Friday from 8AM-4:30PM.
To better assist people with disabilities in working at Unique Auto Grooming, some technology was purchased and installed, including a new floor mat cleaner and wall-mounted shop vacs. With these new tools, seven people supported through Black Hills Works are successfully working at Unique Auto, earning minimum wage, and work alongside five staff.
Partnerships with community partners have been essential in the success of this new enterprise. McKie Auto contracts with Unique Auto to provide all the car detailing services for vehicles in their fleet. BH Services is also partnering with a class at South Dakota Mines. The students spent time researching and observing the work at Unique Auto in order to develop additional technologies to further assist people supported in being successful in their jobs.
Due to the rapid success of Unique Auto, plans to expand into the adjoining building are underway, with the hopes to be operational by early spring 2021.
