Black Hills Works is deeply committed to providing affordable housing for adults with disabilities. In 2025, 372 of our participants lived in our residences. These homes provide a range of support levels to fit everyone’s unique needs. We have been hard at work renovating seven three-bedroom family houses into welcoming, inviting homes for 21 of our participants. Importantly, these smaller homes offer more personalized living environments and greater independence. They’re making it possible for us to move away from larger group homes and toward increased community belonging. Each home is nestled into quiet neighborhoods throughout Rapid City.
These crucial updates wouldn’t be possible without the support and help of our community. In 2025, the John T. Vucurevich Foundation awarded Black Hills Works a $65,000 grant toward renovations at three of these homes. Each three-bedroom home received new flooring, bathroom accessibility remodels, ADA appliances, other necessary improvements, and smart home technology equipment. The results are beautiful, inviting spaces that will provide a cozy place to call home for decades to come.
Maintaining and managing our affordable housing options is always an area of greatest need at Black Hills Works. Having a stable place to call home allows our participants to thrive in all other areas of their lives. We are very proud of our homes. Overseeing our residences is a big job. We employ a talented team which includes a housing director, affordable housing specialist, and maintenance workers. Like all homes, repairs and upkeep are needed throughout the year, from large to small.
Thanks to the very generous help of the John T. Vucurevich Foundation, we are delighted to have transformed these three houses into comfortable, accessible homes for nine of our participants. The foundation’s support helped make it possible for these individuals to move out of their former group homes and into smart homes that are enhancing their independence like never before.
