Planned Giving: Leaving Your Legacy

You are an integral part of the future of Black Hills Works with your planned gift. Planned giving includes contributing noncash revenue, such as appreciated stock or real estate during your lifetime, creating a trust, or including Black Hills Works Foundation (EIN #46-0363653) in your estate plan.

Some donations, such as appreciated stock or charitable qualified distributions from your IRA, may offer significant tax advantages during your lifetime. Other strategies, such as naming the Black Hills Works Foundation as a beneficiary in your will, trust, retirement account, or life insurance policy, cost nothing during your lifetime and may offer significant tax advantages to your family upon your passing.

Donor Advised Funds, initially set up with a sponsoring organization like the Black Hills Area Community Foundation, also offer immediate tax benefits, while benefiting the Black Hills Works Foundation over time.

Individuals who have included the Black Hills Works Foundation as part of their legacy plan become members of our distinguished Evergreen Society.

Guidance on some of these strategies is offered here. We highly recommend that you speak with your attorney or financial advisor before making any decisions with regard to planned giving. If you have general questions about the impact of your gift, or for help facilitating a planned gift, please contact us at [email protected] or 605-718-6274.

Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Securities

If you own stock, mutual funds, or other securities that have grown in value, donating them directly to Black Hills Works Foundation can be more tax-efficient than giving cash. You may be able to avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation and still claim a charitable deduction for the full fair market value. Your broker can transfer shares directly to our account. Contact us at [email protected] or 605-718-6274 and we will send you the transfer instructions.

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)

If you’re 70½ or older, you can give directly from your IRA through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD transfers funds straight from your IRA to Black Hills Works Foundation without counting the withdrawal as taxable income.

For donors 73 and older who must take a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) each year, a QCD can satisfy some or all of that requirement, turning a gift you might make anyway into one that costs you less. Ask your IRA administrator about directing a QCD to us.

Note: The distribution must come directly from your IRA to the Black Hills Works Foundation (not to you and then us) to secure the tax benefits. We’re happy to provide our EIN and mailing information. Please contact us us at [email protected] or 605-718-6274 with any questions.
