Erin Neal – Internal Service Coordinator
Erin Neal has countless stories to share about seeing participants learn and grow. One immediately comes to mind. “There was a participant who did not like to be touched at all,” Erin recalls. They started with “air high-fives” and “air hugs” to gradually build trust. Finally, “one day he wrapped his fingers around mine.” She didn’t know if that would ever happen when they started working together. Moments like these have kept her passionate about her work during 24 years of employment at Black Hills Works.
Erin began as a direct support professional at the Sitka home, applying because her brother worked at the agency at that time. She was also a live-in manager at the Minnesota home, a pre-vocational instructor in the former Industries program, and a lead at the fitness center in day services. She is now an internal service coordinator managing a very large caseload for supported living while transitioning into the same role for shared living. “When you relate each task to a real person, it makes it easier,” Erin explains, discussing her many responsibilities.
Navigating Change
There have been challenges along the way, as with any job. She is proud of “going with the flow” and trusting that changes will be for the best.
“Learning to understand and accept that it will be an ongoing process” has been key to Erin’s resilience through challenges. That, and “having the confidence that you’re in the right place and doing what you should be doing.” Erin also values good working relationships with her teammates, even when opinions differ.
Participant Focused
One of the most significant shifts Erin has witnessed is the move toward “doing with, not for” participants. This shift reflects how she already approached her work. She says, “I’ve always had a true passion to see people get through the struggles of life. I’ve learned to really enjoy seeing participants succeed and supporting them through the process.”
She also says, “I’ve done my best to acknowledge everyone’s dreams and desires for their lives.” Her person-centered approach reflects the Black Hills Works’ core values.
Looking Ahead
Erin hopes staff will continue to recognize that building relationships with participants is transformative. These connections give participants “more confidence and willingness to try new things.”
For new (and seasoned) staff, Erin’s advice is straightforward: “Breathe. Accept guidance. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share your own thoughts.”
This mindset is what has successfully guided Erin through her long tenure with Black Hills Works. It’s not just helpful advice for work – it’s also helpful advice for life in general.
