Occupational therapy is centered on helping people spend their time in ways that matter to them.
Our program at Black Hills Works includes two occupational therapy practitioners: Alaina Arner, COTA/L, and Alexa Steve, MOT, OTR/L. As holistic, person-centered medical providers, they focus on supporting individuals in doing the things they want to occupy their time with.
Direct sessions focus on sensory processing, emotional regulation, wheelchair management, and participation in meaningful occupations. This can include building fine motor skills, developing transfer skills, and learning how to be a self-advocate.
The team also works closely with assistive technology. In collaboration with Lissa Marotz, Assistive Technology Coordinator, and Chris Shreves, Assistive Technology Technician, they support technology needs and use tools that promote independence, dignity of risk, and safety.
Their work extends beyond individual sessions. They help create environments that are more accessible, more sensory-friendly, and better suited for success. They also provide education for staff on safe body mechanics and proper lifting techniques.
Through collaboration, tools, and teamwork, the focus remains on supporting each person in reaching their self-determined goals.
Alaina and Alexa recently returned from the American Occupational Therapy Association conference, and the AT/OT department continues to take part in early innovation.
