Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Darlene! She was born in Rosebud, grew up in Hill City, and moved to Rapid City in 1997 to join Black Hills Works. She is involved in residential programming, employment programming, and keeping busy in the community.
Do you have a job? I work for Monument Health on a Black Hills Works contract, cleaning laundry carts and helping with laundry. I’ve also worked on hotel housekeeping crews and in Black Hills Works central kitchen.
People who are important to you: My mom, brothers, and support staff are important to me.
What makes you happy: I love going for drives in the Black Hills. I like to drive by our old house in Hill City. I enjoy hanging out with my housemates on our new deck. I am also a big fan of the Rapid City Rush and go to as many of their games as I can. And I like to watch basketball. I also like volunteering with my mom every week to assemble kits for foster kids.
What you want people to know about you: I like to help people. My brother says I’m full of joy, fun to be around, thoughtful, and caring.
Favorite things: I like Olive Garden and Wheel of Fortune, but what I really love is music! I know the lyrics to thousands of songs from many genres. My brother says I have perfect pitch and can harmonize to any song. I like it when he plays piano and I sing along.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2026: I am planning a cruise with my family.
What are you most proud of: I am proud of becoming more independent.
Best part of being part of BHW: Having staff who believe in me and encourage me to learn new skills.
How are you connected to the community: I am connected through friendship.
