Storm Update: Spring into Summer

The Special Olympics South Dakota Storm athletes have had a busy and exciting start to the summer season, representing the Black Hills with determination, teamwork, and plenty of celebration along the way.

Although the Area Track Meet was unfortunately canceled for the fourth year in a row due to weather, athletes still had many opportunities to compete, connect, and shine during the 2026 State Summer Games in Spearfish.

The excitement began with the Rapid City Torch Run on May 13, helping kick off the excitement and celebrate the athletes heading into competition. Opening Ceremony followed the next evening in Spearfish, bringing athletes, coaches, families, and supporters together to celebrate another incredible season.

Swimming competition took place on May 15, where seven Storm athletes competed and brought home an impressive 24 medals across first, second, and third place finishes. Athletes also participated in a cornhole demonstration event alongside 45 teams from across the state, highlighting teamwork, sportsmanship, and connection throughout the games.

Track and field events wrapped up the week on May 16 with 60 Storm athletes competing in a wide variety of events. From races and relays to field competitions, athletes showed incredible effort and determination throughout the day.

The momentum continues this summer as the Special Olympics Walking Club begins next week, creating another opportunity for athletes to stay active, build friendships, and enjoy time together in the community.

Looking ahead, six athletes and unified partners from the Storm will travel to the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games this July in Minnesota. Representing the Storm on the national stage are Dylan Thomason and Brett Thomason in bowling, Jackie Schofield and Jackie Smith in bocce ball, Chris Bultena in softball, and David Tanner in softball.

Bocce ball and softball registration will open in mid-June, with practices beginning in mid-July as athletes prepare for another exciting season ahead. Stay tuned!
