Grants Officer
Black Hills Works Foundation
What does a grants professional do?
I work with the great team at Black Hills Works Foundation. I learn about needs at Black Hills Works, research possible grant funding, collaborate with program staff to gather information, apply for grants, ensure grant awards are executed properly, and celebrate what those grants help us achieve!
Black Hills Works provides many programs, so there’s always something new and interesting to learn about: transportation, home construction and renovations, visual and performing arts, employment programs, and more.
What kinds of projects does a grants officer work on?
I am so fortunate to have a small role in obtaining funding for many different projects!
A few recent projects include:
- Funding for Flutter Productions performances. I can’t wait to see The Little Prince this July!
- New vehicles for our employment programs on Ellsworth Air Force Base and at businesses around Rapid City.
- Updated security systems for our activity centers.
- Matching grants for Artists in Residence at Suzie Cappa Art Center.
- Construction of our new duplex that will provide a home for eight people.
Seeing projects come to fruition from initial grant funder research, to applications, to tangible results is very meaningful. Some projects take a very long time, like building a new home. Others are completed very quickly. I’m always thankful for the generosity of our granting partners.
What is your favorite part of being a grants officer?
I especially enjoy meeting our participants and seeing them out and about in the community. Their joy and excitement are contagious, whether they’re performing onstage, visiting a park, or being recognized at our annual gala. Knowing that the work I do impacts them in a positive way is very meaningful.
I also get to work with some pretty fabulous people who are making a big difference in the world!
