Meet Sammy, one of the 2026 Honorees

Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Sammy! He joined Black Hills Works in 1989 after growing up in Laramie and Casper. He moved to Rapid City as a teen. Sammy is in our supported living program and lives independently in his own apartment. He really likes having the freedom to come and go as he pleases. His pathway to possibility is employment.

Do you have a job? If so, where: I have worked for the Rapid City school district for several years. I clean the bus barn, maintenance shop, and warehouse. I like working with the people. They are friendly.

People who are important to you: My parents were important to me. I like playing video games with my friend Matt. I appreciate my staff, who help me with grocery shopping, appointments, and budgeting.

What makes you happy: Just being alive! As well as fresh air and my job.

What you want people to know about you: I’m easy to get along with and friendly.

Favorite things:  Playing video games. Restaurants like Qdoba, Albertano’s, and other spicy Mexican. Television shows like Chips, Knight Rider, Sanford and Son, Different Strokes, All in the Family, and WWE. And lots of music – rap, Johnny Cash, John Denver, the Beatles, the Eagles, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Gloria Estefan.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2026? Improving my health and strength.

Best part of being part of BHW: The staff – those who helped me and taught me things like budgeting. I’m glad to be around people I can trust.

One word to describe you? Patient.

Congratulations, Sammy!
