Meet Ariel, one of the 2026 Honorees

Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Ariel! She grew up in Green Grass, SD near Eagle Butte in a large family. She joined Black Hills Works in 2011 as a young woman.

Programs involved with at BHW: I’m involved in employment programming, Flutter Productions, and community supported living.

Do you have a job? If so, where: I work as a custodian in Black Hills Works’ main office building. I’m here five days a week. I previously worked in custodial at Ellsworth Air Force Base and Crazy Horse Memorial. My job keeps me busy.

People who are important to you: Drake, my border collie, is very important to me. I look up to Tamie Hopp at Black Hills Works Foundation. She’s one of the nicest ladies I know. James, a former supervisor, is also important to me. And my support staff who help me with budgeting, medical appointments, and cooking!

What makes you happy: My dog makes me very happy. I also like dancing to upbeat music like techno. All kinds of things make me happy.

What you want people to know about you: I’m kind of quiet but if you get to know me I’ll start talking. I think my dad knows me better than I do!

Favorite things: I like watching scary movies, talking and videochatting with friends, and ballroom dancing. I’ve been doing that for two years and it makes me feel great. The best meal I ever had was at the Vertex.

What would you like to accomplish in 2026? I plan to continue participating in Flutter Productions and working on my health.

What are you most proud of: I am proud of coming to work every day. I am very proud of the beautiful dress I made for FashionABLE. I learned to use a sewing machine to make my Four Sacred Colors dress. I beaded my moccasins as well. I like being on stage. I feel like I’m living my dream.

Best part of being part of BHW: I like how my staff help me learn. They have a positive impact on my life. I look up to my hardworking co-workers. I like the independence of being able to live on my own with support when I need it and having transportation from Black Hills Works.

Congratulations, Ariel!
