Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Ray! He grew up in Gregory County and went to school there. He joined Black Hills Works in 1981.
Programs involved with at BHW: I am in community supported living, which means I live independently with some support from staff. I am also in the vocational program.
Do you have a job? I have worked for some time as a custodian at Family Fare. I’ve also had other jobs. I really liked making ladders when I lived in Winner. I use Rapid Ride and Dial-a-Ride to get to work.
People who are important to you: My mom and sisters are important to me. So are my roommate and the Black Hills Works staff who help me with groceries and budgeting. They helped me find my new apartment.
What makes you happy: I really love riding my bike! I have three bikes. I ride them all over town and often attach a trailer to them to carry items. I also like going for walks and watching the scenery from my apartment balcony. I like Summer Nights, Hills Alive, and other downtown events.
What you want people to know about you: I am kind of quiet but when you get to know me you can tell I’m funny, determined, and charismatic.
Favorite things: I like the independence of living alone in a quiet neighborhood. I also like McDonald’s and Culvers. I have lots of favorite TV shows and like listening to rock music.
What would you like to accomplish in 2026? I’m going to keep working on my budgeting.
What are you most proud of: I’m proud of living my life and getting out and about in the community.
Best part of being part of BHW: Having staff to talk with and a roommate I like.
