Meet Patrick, one of the 2026 Honorees

Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Patrick! He grew up in Rapid City and attended local schools. He joined Black Hills Works in 1994 as a young man.

Programs involved in with at BHW: I began as a participant in day programs and pre-vocational training while living at home with my family. I joined residential programming in 2018.

People who are important to you: My dad and my sister are very important to me, as was my mom, who passed in 2020.

What makes you happy: I really enjoy eating and being on the move. I always walk over 10,000 steps a day. Spending time with my family makes me happy. I spend several days a week with my dad.

What you want people to know about you: My family want people to know that I am very loving and like to be the center of attention. I am funny. I make people laugh and bring my family a lot of joy. Lots of people around town know me. I am also a cancer survivor. My early diagnosis led to my sister beginning early screening.

Favorite things: Pizza and cookies! I like listening to German polkas with my dad, being sung to, and being outside. I’m very curious and observant. I like to go to new places, visit Walmart and the mall, and take bus rides with my Black Hills Works staff and housemates.

What are you most proud of: I am most proud of my family.

Best part of being part of BHW: My Black Hills Works staff are amazing. They have helped me grow. My family can see how much the staff care about me and my housemates.

Congratulations, Patrick!
