Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet George. He was born in Burke, SD, and grew up in Herrick, SD, and the Black Hills. George joined Black Hills Works in 1975 for six years, then returned in 1988. He is involved in our residential programming.
Do you have a job? If so, where? I’m retired now, but for many years I worked in janitorial jobs at Ellsworth Air Force Base and area hotels. I ended my career with ten years at the westside Family Fare!
People who are important to you: My family is important to me. I came from a big family and was the fourth of seven children. I am still close to my sister.
What makes you happy: Traveling, having quiet time to myself, and getting out to do things.
What you want people to know about you: I really love state history. I know a lot of state trivia. I also call people by their college mascot. (ie, “Coyote” for someone who went to USD.)
Favorite things: I love Millstone and Perkins. Anything there is fine except for soup or oyster stew! I like to watch old detective shows like Murder, She Wrote and In the Heat of the Night. Music from 1955-1972 is my favorite to listen to.
Favorite activities or hobbies: I collect souvenirs from all 50 states, like spoons, quarters, magnets, and state flags. Visits to California and Washington were my favorite trips. I also play wii bowling and rummy on my computer.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025: Collecting more state souvenirs.
Best part of being part of BHW: Staff who understand me.
How are you connected to the community? I am connected through history.
Congratulations, George!
