Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Joanne! She joined Black Hills Works in 1998 after growing up in Trenton, New Jersey. She moved to Rapid City as a teen. Joanne is in our supported living program and lives independently in her own apartment. She really likes being independent and loves doing puzzles and crafts. Her pathway to possibility is family.
Do you have a job? If so, where: I worked at Bandit Inn at Ellsworth Air Force Base for several years, then started working at the EAFB Day Care for about a year. Then I worked for a janitorial crew for Black Hills Works before returning to Raider Café. I’m not working right now so I can take care of my health.
People who are important to you: My family is important to me, especially my son, Lewis. My staff are also important; they help me with shopping, getting to my medical appointments, and helping me organize my things.
What makes you happy: Being around people. I enjoy picking on staff! And I love collecting hat pins – I have over 400!
What you want people to know about you: I love pink and I am funny. I’m a breast cancer survivor and pink is my favorite color!
Favorite things: I enjoy going shopping, especially to thrift stores. I like putting puzzles together. Before I start a new puzzle, I will sort and count every piece to make sure it is all there. I like to create wreaths and other crafts.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2026? Getting healthy so I can get back to work.
Best part of being part of BHW: My staff. They were there for me when I found out I had breast cancer, and they helped me through. They are like my family now.
One word to describe you? Pink.
Congratulations, Joanne!
