Meet Kandie, one of the 2025 Honorees

Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Kandie! She is originally from Lead, South Dakota and became a Black Hills Works participant in 1996. She is involved in residential and employment services. She is also involved in advocacy work through Black Hills Works.

Do you have a job? If so, where: I work at Raider Café mostly doing dishes but sometimes cleaning floors, tables, and bathrooms. I like my job because it keeps me busy and helps pay my bills.

People who are important to you (family, friends, staff, etc.): My parents, my siblings, my nieces and nephews, and my cousins.

What makes you happy: I believe happiness has to come from within. My faith, my church, and bible study make me happy.

What you want people to know about you: I am a good, respectful person.

Favorite things (meal, restaurant, song, movie, TV show, etc): I like doing laundry, cooking, going out to eat with my boyfriend Leo, and reading romance novels and cook books.

Favorite activities or hobbies: I collect dolls. I have over 100 porcelain and vinyl dolls. I also enjoy advocacy work. I took a policy course, have been involved with A-Team, and have done work with other organizations.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025: I already accomplised one goal: moving to a new apartment where I feel safe. Now, I need to come up with a new goal!

Best part of being part of BHW: Having my own apartment and having my independence. Having staff there and talking to them about going to the doctors and having that support. They also help with bills, shopping, and work.

How are you connected to the community? I am connected to the community through work, advocacy, and church.

Congratulations, Kandie!
