Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Kathleen! She was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, lived in several states as a child, and attended high school in Orange County, California. She joined Black Hills Works in 1991. She’s involved in residential programming and day services.
Do you have a job? If so, where? I am retired now but worked in food service and on job contracts with Black Hills Works Industries. I really liked working at Carl’s Junior fast food in California!
People who are important to you: My son and his wife, my grandsons, my brother and his wife, my housemates, and my staff. My staff are really nice.
What makes you happy: Spending time with friends, being out in the sunshine, doing crafts, ice cream, and going for drives in the Hills.
What you want people to know about you: It can be a little hard to get to know me. Sometimes I get grouchy – and sometimes I’m nice!
Favorite things: Twos Cows Creamery ice cream in Hot Springs, I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, and Cher.
Favorite activities or hobbies: Doing crafts, coloring, my yarn work, getting my nails painted, and hanging out with my friends.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025: Strengthening my legs.
Best part of being part of BHW: The staff that help me, even if I get crabby with them.
How are you connected to the community? I am connected through friendship.
Congratulations, Kathleen!
