Meet Matthew, one of the 2025 Honorees

Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Matthew! He grew up near Piedmont, South Dakota and joined Black Hills Works in 1999. He has lived independently in the same apartment since 2003 with limited support. He is also involved in our employment program and Special Olympics, where he does basketball, track, and softball.

Do you have a job? If so, where? I have worked for Monument Health since 2003 on a variety of jobs. I like being able to joke with my coworkers.

People who are important to you: My parents, my sister, and coworkers.

What makes you happy: Going to the YMCA to exercise and riding my bikes on the weekends. I saved up to purchase my bikes and they’re each nicknamed after a car model.

What you want people to know about you: I’m a great guy and very nice to be around. I’m also very patriotic.

Favorite things: I like Guardians of the Galaxy and Marvel. Star-Lord is my favorite character. I like classic rock on Q92.3, old Super Man movies and WWE, and my model train.

Favorite activities or hobbies: Besides biking and exercising, I like fishing, playing my PlayStation 4, and keeping a little aquarium. I like doing 5Ks, biking the Mickelson Trail with my mom, and have won many medals with Special Olympics. I also earned my black belt in taekwondo.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025:  Learning new tasks at work.

Best part of being part of BHW: Support to live independently and do all the things I love to do.

How are you connected to the community?   I am connected through bicycling.

Congratulations, Matthew!
