Meet Russell, one of the 2026 Honorees

Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Russell! He grew up on a ranch near Hill City, where he also attended school, and joined the Black Hills Works family in 1998.

Programs involved in with BHW: I’ve done Special Olympics since school. I’m in track, softball, basketball, bocce ball, corn hole, and bowling. My wife and I are in the Shared Living program.

Do you have a job? If so, where: I work on Ellsworth Air Force Base on a Black Hills Works custodial contract. I get along with everyone.

People who are important to you: Richelle, my wife. My sisters and my parents. I really get along with my family.

What makes you happy: My wife makes me happy. It’s an adventure. Hanging out with my family and friends and celebrating my niece getting married. Going to church. It’s a good life.

What you want people to know about you: I’m a good guy and I’m pretty nice. I’m really mellow and I have a good sense of humor.

Favorite things: Sunday night bowling league with my wife. We get out a lot. Going on trips with my sister. Eating out at Golden Corral, Golden Fortune, and Pizza Ranch. I love my brother-in-law’s homemade pizza dough! I like action movies and Looney Tunes.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2026: Working on a driver’s license.

What are you most proud of: My marriage and my other relationships.

Best part of being part of BHW: I like a lot about it. We learn a lot. I like being with my friends, doing Special Olympics, and having a job.

How are you connected to the community: Through friendship.
