Meet Troy, one of the 2026 Honorees

Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Troy! He grew up in Rapid City and joined the Black Hills Works family in 1998.

Programs involved in with BHW: I am very involved with Special Olympics. I am in bocce ball, softball, basketball, track and field, and participate in the annual Polar Plunge. My wife and I have our own apartment with some support from Black Hills Works staff. I love having my own space.

Do you have a job? If so, where: I work on Ellsworth Air Force Base on a Black Hills Works contract. I worked for 23 years at the commissary and now have been on a custodial crew for three years. I like that my job keeps me busy and out of trouble!

People who are important to you: My wife, Melissa. We met at the commissary. She’s funny and adorable. Also my in-laws and my sister. The Black Hills Works staff who work with me are like family. They treat me good and I treat them good!

What makes you happy: Everything! Playing games, going for walks, and riding my bike. Being outside, going bowling, and playing football.

What you want people to know about you: I’m nice and kind. I respect the people around me and want them to respect me too.

Favorite things: Playing videos games, watching scary movies, playing with our cat, and eating out at Golden Corral or Mongolian Grill.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2026: I want to go camping. I’d like to get a driver’s license and car.

What are you most proud of: Myself and my wife – we’ve been together for 22 years!

Best part of being part of BHW: Spending time with staff and participants, and knowing I can trust them.

One word to describe me: Happy.

Congratulations, Troy!
