Pathways to Possibility…this is our theme for 2026! Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories of how doors open when people come together—creating pathways that support full, meaningful lives. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Joleen! She grew up in Rapid City and attended Central High School. She joined Black Hills Works in 2005 as a young woman.
Programs involved with at BHW: I’m involved in day services, Shared Living with my mom, Special Olympics, and volunteering for nonprofits like Meals on Wheels, Feeding South Dakota, and the library. Through Special Olympics, I participate in softball, long jump and running in track and field, bocce ball, and bowling!
People who are important to you: My parents, my twin sister Janelle, and our older sister are important to me, along with good friends like Carmen at Black Hills Works and Dee, one of my support staff.
What makes you happy: Being with my friends makes me happy. I like dancing, parties, and dressing up. I also love my little dog, Oakley. I like going mall walking and spending time outside. I like seeing my friends at church.
What you want people to know about you: Black Hills Works has opened up my world. I’m quiet, usually easy-going, and happy. My mom says I’m good company.
Favorite things: I like to keep busy. I love to doodle and write in notebooks and sleep in. I also like Perkins’ salmon, Burger King, Starbucks, and Dairy Queen. My favorites are hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries.
What would you like to accomplish in 2026? I plan to keep working on helping with household chores.
What are you most proud of: I am proud of getting myself up and ready in the morning, using Dial-a-Ride independently, and making my own decisions.
