Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.
Meet Latrell. He grew up in Rapid City and started participating in Black Hills Works programs in 2023. He is involved in our day services programming.
Do you have a job? If so, where? I have worked in custodial settings.
People who are important to you: My mom, grandma, and siblings are very important to me.
What makes you happy: I like winning card games! I also like going ice skating. I used to play hockey.
What you want people to know about you: I’m a strong self-advocate and am not afraid to speak up for myself. I am independent. My staff say I have a good sense of humor and am a little mischievous.
Favorite things: My grandma’s tater tot casserole, Taco John’s, cookies, and rap artists Chris Brown and Rihanna. Some of my favorite movies are The Goonies, Home Alone, Twilight, and The Longest Yard.
Favorite activities or hobbies: I like going fishing and bowling. I also like to teach my housemates how to play card games. I enjoy watching the TV show Cops and helping grill at my house.
What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025: Finding employment.
Best part of being part of BHW: Having staff that take me places and make me laugh.
How are you connected to the community? I am connected through friendship.
