Meet Sara, one of the 2025 Honorees

Opportunities through Community…this is our theme for 2025! Throughout the year, you will learn how people supported by Black Hills Works are connected to our community through the opportunities you make possible. These stories will include the 24 honorees that will be celebrated at our Annual Recognition Gala.

Meet Sara! She grew up in Rapid City, attended Stevens High School, and joined Black Hills Works in 2004. She’s involved in residential programming, employment support, and Flutter Productions. She’s also involved in Special Olympics bowling and equestrian through Suncatchers, which she’s done for 20 years.

Do you have a job? If so, where? I work at the YMCA, folding towels. I love it there, have a great boss, and love that I can buy lunch in the café there.

People who are important to you: My mom and dad, my niece, my two brothers, and my sister-in-law.

What makes you happy: Hanging out with my family. I also love cats and enjoy the one my roommate has.

What you want people to know about you: I’m a very nice person. I get along with my friends and I really love my young niece. I’m helping her with her reading.

Favorite things: Taco Bell and also Italian food. Country music, especially Garth Brooks, and Disney movies. Frozen is my favorite! I also like to go shopping.

Favorite activities or hobbies: I’m really enjoying Flutter Productions. I also like arts, crafts, and painting and hanging out in my apartment.

What is one thing you would like to accomplish in 2025: I’m working hard to lose weight. I work with a personal trainer at a local gym who has been very supportive. I’m also working with my staff on cooking and shopping.

Best part of being part of BHW: Having the independence and support to pursue my own interests and create connections within the community.

How are you connected to the community?  I am connected through employment.

Congratulations, Sara!
